One of my childhood heroes passed away today. Ray Harryhausen was famous for pioneering a fully integrated version of stop-motion animation that allowed actors to do battle with skeleton armies, giant lizards, mega scorpions, six-armed statues and a whole range of other fantastic beasts and villains. I knew his name before I knew the name of any other special effects wizard... heck, I knew his name before I knew the names of a lot of actors.
There was something about his work that was so indelible, so creepy and vivid, and yeah - I know it doesn't look "real" but he broke the barriers of what could be achieved in film during the middle part of the twentieth century.

New Zealand via Oregon 3-piece Unknown Mortal Orchestra are releasing their sophomore LP "II" on the 5th February, but in the meantime you can currently stream it in full by following the below link. Those who enjoyed their debut album should be pleased with the impending offering.

Plans are afoot for the South Korean government to fund a $264 billion super city. That's about 66 times the amount George Lucas just got paid for handing Star Wars over to Disney. The project is scheduled to be completed in 2030, and will include a 'megastrip' that will be 200 metres high, 880s metres wide and 3.3 kilometres long. I'm assuming the megastrip is the bit that looks like a giant fucking cock.
The news of this ambitious plan comes hot on the heels that the South Korean navy will soon break the record for having the most seamen.

In related news, North Korea is building a sister city shaped like a giant vagina.

Just a shoutout I got from your friendly neighbourhood zine-queen Elouise, if anyone is interested in putting a stall together for the upcoming TINA zine fair in Newcastle, please look below...
TINA is now able to offer the stalls for the event free to stalls with zine/books/magazines/comics/independent publications as well as covering the public liability to those who need it. Tables will be allocated on a first in first serve basis, and reservations are filling up fast so get on it! I'm looking forward to seeing all the new and independent publications being made around Australia, and meeting some more new faces at the fair.

Troma Films are probably most famous for their Toxic Avenger films and a variety of other low budget horror films. They aren't films for everyone but they have a lot of dedicated fans, and they're the sort of films that exemplify the tag 'cult movie'.
Anyway, long story short - Troma have released 150 films onto their youtube channel for everyone to watch for free. How fucking awesome is that? Now that's a studio that really cares about filmmaking. These are guys who just love making movies, it's never been about the money for them and they've carved a workable niche for themselves doing what they love doing (and encouraging others to do the same).

Penrith punksters Chaz H. Scally have reformed for a special upcoming show. If you're a fan of ska mixed with ultra-heavy metal and hardcore than you should be able to find something to love about Chaz H. Scally. Joining them for the show are Steppin Razor, Capa Capo, 10 Paces and Trauma Victim.
It will take place on the 6th of October at Spaceport (12 Chalder Street, Marrickville). Show kicks off at 5:30 PM and it's $10 entry. Nice one.

It shouldn't be a real surprise to anyone that a Vacation 'reboot' is in the works at the moment. It's the sort of series that just refuses to die. This new film will apparently focus on a grown up Rusty Griswold (played by three separate actors in the original four Vacation films) as he takes his own family on a vacation of their own.
The idea itself doesn't sound bad, I could always dig another Vacation film if it goes for the same kind of laughs and has the right lead. Ed Helms is currently in talks for the lead role, and I think this is a great step in the right direction. Helms has been going from strength to strength in the last few years...

This animal was recently photographed messing about in China and people have been freaking out that it's some kind of escaped mutant from a research facility. Theories range from it being a dog to some kind of mutated pig or horse. It's quite a clear photo and it most definitely blurs the lines no matter which of those animals you think it is.
Chinese officials have claimed that it's actually a rare and expensive breed of Chinese dog known as the Hairless Chinese Crested Dog (or something like that).
I am very sceptical about its dog credentials. Is it just me or does that picture clearly show that the animal has hooves? Last time I checked, dogs don't have hooves!
